below are a few of the books that I have bought during my education as an ECP some have helped and some are less than helpful.

I received them all from Amazon and spent in total over £800. So if you just want it to look something up or for a short period of time - borrow the book or get it from the medical library.

History Taking, Examination, and Record Keeping in Emergency Medicine

Guly H.R.
ISBN: 019262461X, Paperback - BUY

A worthwhile book to consider purchasing. The advice on record keeping is approached in a refreshing common sense way which many paramedics and nurses entering an ECP role will feel comfortable with and benefit from.

Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine

Longmore M, Wilkinson I, Torok E
ISBN: 0192629883, Paperback - BUY

I carry two books around with me. This one is the less frequently used than the Accident and Emergency version, but it does give the ECP a broad range of medical text in a compact form.

The New Consultation: Developing Doctor-Patient Communication

Theo Schofield, Peter Tate, Peter Havelock, David Pendleton
ISBN: 0192632884, Paperback - BUY

I know how to communicate with patients.... or so I thought until I read this book and placed it into practice. After a video consultation with critical analysis using this book as a benchmark it is interesting how much my patient consultation style has altered.

Reflections in Learning and Professional Development

Jennifer Moon
ISBN: 074943452X, Paperback - BUY

Most people on my MSc Advanced Healthcare Practice course brought this and found it to be useful. Unfortunatly I found it hard to get along with. I recommend a library viewing before purchasing to make sure it suits your style.

Pocketbook of Orthopaedics and Fractures

Ronald McRae
ISBN: 0443059527, Paperback - BUY

Very detailed examination and interpretation text. Great as a reference book and worthwhile buying if you are based in a minor injury unit or A&E dept and will be assessing injuries and determining the need to x-ray.

Concise Medical Dictionary

Elizabeth Martin
ISBN: 0198607539, Paperback - BUY

Yawn

A Dictionary of Nursing

Tanya A. McFerran
ISBN: 0192800728, Paperback - BUY

Basic, very basic

Discovery of Grounded Theory: Strategies for Qualitative Research

Barney G.Glaser/Anselm L.Strauss
ISBN: 0202302601, Paperback - BUY

I recommend this book for any ECP wishing to write a dissertation based on qualitative research and focusing on grounded theory

The Inner Consultation: How to Develop an Effective and Intuitive Consulting Style

Roger Neighbour
ISBN: 1900603675, Paperback - BUY

Really good book. It gives scenarios of consultations and the learning experiance builds up through the course of the book. Recommended

Research Mindedness for Practice

Pam Smith
ISBN: 044305293X, Paperback - BUY

For all health care professionals it demystifies research and is generally a good book for non-researchers among us.

Health Care Law

Jonathan Montgomery
ISBN: 0198765746, Paperback - BUY

Do not buy this book. The book is superb for identifying specific references for specific areas of interest.

As an example, if you are looking for the definition and Health Care Law of 'the incompetent patient' you may find it only takes up three paragraphs out of the whole book. Much better to borrow it from the library.

The Minor Illness Manual

Gina Johnson, Ian Hill-Smith, Chris Ellis
ISBN: 1857754824, Paperback - BUY

Superb book. A definate to buy.

Minor Injuries. A Clinical Guide for Nurses

Dennis Purcell
ISBN: 0443062773, Paperback - BUY

Another Fantastic book - buy it as you will refer back to it frequently.

Atlas of Orthopedic Examination of the Peripheral Joints

Ludwig Ombregt, Pierre Bisschop
ISBN: 0702021245, Paperback - BUY

Awful book. I think it was the thong that the 'patient' was wearing that put me off - a bit strange.

Clinical Examination (Third Edition)

Owen Epstein, John Cookson, G. David Perkin, David P. De Bono
ISBN: 0723432295, Paperback - BUY

Superb book. Great photos and diagrams. Loads of useful information to take away from this book.

Nursing Models and Nursing Practice

Peter Aggleton, Helen Chalmers
ISBN: 0333488229, Paperback - BUY

Good book as an introduction to Nursing Models. The problem I have with this and all the other Nursing Model type books is that they are not written for our role.

So if anyone wants to write an ECP Model of Care book I would be the first in line to buy it. Until then we have to make do with this type of text - good but not relevant in many cases.

Macleod's Clinical Examination

John Munro, Ian Campbell
ISBN: 0443061726, Paperback - BUY

Good reference book. I bought it and found it useful but it may be worthwhile checking it out at the library first - just to make sure it’s what your after.

Nurse Practitioners Clinical Skills and Professional Issues

Mike Walsh, Alison Crumbie, Shirley Reveley
ISBN: 0750639903, Paperback - BUY

A great book to buy. Not much in the way of pretty pictures. It also gives a great insight into the lessons learned by Nurse Practitioners of how they are addressing some of the professional issues. Well worth buying.

Oxford Handbook of Accident and Emergency Medicine

Robin N. Illingworth, Colin E. Robertson, Michael Clancy, P. Munro, Jonathan P. Wyatt
ISBN: 0192627511, Paperback - BUY

Great book. Best of the whole lot. I carry this in my response bag all the time as it's a great source for information. Concise and to the point. 100% recommend this as my first choice for ECP reference material in practice.
